What EPF withdrawal usually means
EPF is the contributory provident fund under the Employees’ Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952 and the EPF Scheme. Members often ask about (1) final settlement / full withdrawal after leaving employment, (2) partial advances while still in service (housing, illness, marriage, education and other Scheme purposes), and (3) transfer of the account when changing jobs. Pension (EPS) and EDLI benefits are related but follow separate claim paths.
Final settlement after leaving a job
When you leave covered employment, you may apply for final PF settlement through the employer-attested or online Aadhaar-OTP route, depending on current EPFO process. Composite online claim forms on the unified member portal commonly cover PF (historically Form 19 themes), pension withdrawal / scheme certificate (Form 10C themes), and advances (Form 31 themes). EPFO has from time to time prescribed waiting periods after exit before full withdrawal is allowed for members below a certain age — check the live circular on epfindia.gov.in before assuming you can claim immediately.

Advances / partial withdrawal while in service
The EPF Scheme lists specific purposes for advances or withdrawals (for example housing, repayment of housing loan, medical treatment, marriage, education, and other notified grounds). Each purpose has eligibility conditions (service length, amount caps linked to contributions, documentary proof). Do not invent a purpose to fit the form — false declarations can lead to rejection and other consequences. Official purpose lists and caps change; read the current Scheme paragraph that matches your need.
UAN, KYC and online claim path
Activate and seed your Universal Account Number (UAN) with Aadhaar, PAN and bank account as required. Online claims typically need Aadhaar-linked mobile OTP and matching KYC. Use only the official EPFO member interface or UMANG — beware of phishing sites and agents who ask for your OTP. Keep the claim reference number and SMS/email acknowledgements.
If the claim is rejected or delayed
Read the rejection reason on the portal. Common issues are KYC mismatch, incorrect bank IFSC, incomplete service history, or employer not approving where attestation is still needed. Raise a grievance on the EPFO portal / EPFiGMS with documents. Escalation to the Regional PF Commissioner follows EPFO grievance process — this site does not file grievances for you.
Papers to keep
UAN and member passbook / contribution history; Aadhaar, PAN and cancelled cheque or bank passbook; relieving / resignation letter; employer establishment ID; marriage / medical / property documents if claiming an advance; and screenshots of any portal error. For nominees / death claims, death certificate and nomination / succession papers.
What this guide is not
It is not a live rate card of how much you can withdraw, not tax advice on premature withdrawal, and not a promise that any online claim will succeed. Employer-specific PF trusts (exempted establishments) may use a parallel process.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I withdraw my full EPF while still employed?
- Full final settlement is generally linked to exit from covered employment (subject to live EPFO rules). While in service, only Scheme-listed advances / partial withdrawals for permitted purposes are usually available.
- Do I need my employer’s approval for an online claim?
- Many Aadhaar-OTP online claims proceed without physical employer attestation when KYC is seeded, but some cases still need employer action. Check the portal status and EPFO help text for your claim type.
- Where do I apply?
- Through the official EPFO member portal or UMANG after logging in with UAN. Avoid third-party sites that ask for your OTP.
- What if my claim is rejected?
- Read the rejection reason, fix KYC or documents, and re-apply or use EPFiGMS grievance. Adhiwakta does not file EPFO grievances.
- Does Adhiwakta process EPF withdrawals?
- No. We do not file EPFO claims or guarantee settlement. Educational guidance only via Ask or the AI helper.
