FIR and police complaint basics (India)

Plain-language notes on FIRs, complaints, and what to prepare — educational only, not legal advice.

Complaint vs FIR

A police complaint tells the station what happened. An FIR (First Information Report) is typically for cognizable offences and starts investigation. Procedures and remedies can vary by state and facts.

What to write down

Dates, places, names, injuries or losses, and copies of notices, medical notes, or messages. Do not alter documents. Avoid sharing passwords or OTP codes on any website.

If registration is refused

Higher remedies may exist depending on your district and facts. An independent advocate can explain options in general terms — Adhiwakta does not guarantee any filing or result.

Emergencies

If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services. Online forms are not for emergencies.
