Stamp paper, notary and registration — the basics
Stamp duty and registration rules are set by each State. Rent agreements over one year must be registered; some States require registration even for shorter leave and licence agreements. Affidavits are attested by a Notary Public, Oath Commissioner or Magistrate. RTI applications need no stamp paper — only the prescribed fee (₹10 for Central Government offices; BPL applicants exempt).
