FAQs

What is IPC 420 called now?
Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property (IPC 420) is now section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. Plain cheating (IPC 417) is BNS 318(2) and cheating by personation (IPC 419) is BNS 319(2).
What is 498A in the BNS?
Cruelty by a husband or his relatives (IPC 498A) is now split into BNS 85 (the offence and punishment) and BNS 86 (the meaning of 'cruelty').
Which law applies to an offence committed before 1 July 2024?
The BNS, BNSS and BSA came into force on 1 July 2024. Offences committed before that date are generally dealt with under the old law (IPC), and proceedings already pending continue under the savings clauses — but the details depend on the facts and the stage of the case, so always check the bare Act and court rulings.
CrPC 438 and CrPC 482 — what are they now?
Anticipatory bail (CrPC 438) is now BNSS 482. The High Court's inherent powers (CrPC 482, used for quashing) are now BNSS 528. Don't mix up the two '482's.
Where do these numbers come from?
From the official correspondence tables published by NCRB / Ministry of Home Affairs. A matching section can still differ in wording or punishment, so read the new section itself before relying on it.
