How to decide which record is correct; what UIDAI allows online and at an Aadhaar centre; the lifetime limits on name, gender and date-of-birth changes and what to do when the limit is exhausted; current UIDAI charges; PAN correction and PAN–Aadhaar linking under the Income-tax Act, 2025; EPFO’s online correction; and when a gazette notification, affidavit or court route is needed. Why a small mismatch causes big problems
Government and financial systems now match records automatically. A spelling difference, a missing middle name or a different date of birth between Aadhaar and PAN can stop PAN–Aadhaar linking, and an unlinked PAN can become inoperative for tax purposes. The same mismatch can hold up bank or demat KYC, EPF withdrawals or transfers, scholarships and direct benefit transfers, passport applications and insurance claims. Fixing it early, in the right order, saves months.
Step 1: decide which record is correct
Before changing anything, choose the one document you will treat as the base — usually the birth certificate, the Class 10 certificate, or a passport — and make the other records match it. If the base document itself is wrong, correct it first: birth certificates are corrected by the State’s Registrar of Births and Deaths (see the birth certificate guide), and school records through the board’s procedure. Remember that Aadhaar is an identity number, not conclusive proof of age: in Saroj v. IFFCO-Tokio General Insurance (2024) the Supreme Court held that Aadhaar is not proof of date of birth and preferred the school leaving certificate.

Aadhaar: what you can update and where
UIDAI allows updates of name, gender, date of birth, address, mobile number and email (demographic details) and of photo, fingerprints and iris (biometrics). UIDAI’s 2026 handbook lists online requests (with OTP on the registered mobile and a valid document in your own name) for address and also for minor name corrections, date of birth and gender; mobile number, biometrics and larger changes need a visit to an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre with original supporting documents from UIDAI’s list of accepted documents. What the portal actually offers can change, so check myAadhaar first. Use only UIDAI’s official portals and centres — never share OTPs or pay agents who promise a ‘guaranteed’ change. Keep the Update Request Number (URN) or enrolment ID slip to track the request.
Current UIDAI charges
According to UIDAI’s charges sheet: Aadhaar enrolment is free; a demographic update (name, gender, date of birth, address, mobile or email — one field or several together) costs ₹75; a biometric update costs ₹125, but is free the first time between ages 5–7, the first or second time between 15–17, and free between 7–15 until 30 September 2027; email update through the Aadhaar mobile app is free until 31 December 2026; and document update (proof of identity and address) is free on the myAadhaar portal until 14 June 2027, or ₹75 at a centre. Charges are revised from time to time — check uidai.gov.in and the amount printed on your acknowledgement slip.
The lifetime limits — and the exception process
UIDAI’s update policy limits name changes to twice in a lifetime, and gender and date of birth to once each. Address, mobile, email and biometrics have no such limit. If a request is rejected because the limit is exhausted, UIDAI’s process is: enrol for the update at an Aadhaar centre with valid supporting documents, then call 1947 or email help@uidai.gov.in quoting the latest URN / EID and ask for ‘exception processing’; the case goes to the UIDAI Regional Office for your State, which verifies and decides. For a name change beyond the limit UIDAI asks for a gazette notification (or documents such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or adoption certificate), and for a further gender change a medical certificate or transgender ID card.
If your Aadhaar update is rejected
Read the rejection reason on the status page or SMS — common reasons are blurred documents, a document not in the applicant’s name, or a mismatch between the document and the requested change. Correct the cause and apply again. If you believe the rejection is wrong, raise a grievance through UIDAI’s grievance portal, the 1947 helpline, help@uidai.gov.in, or the Regional Office, quoting the URN. Keep copies of everything you submitted.
PAN: correcting your name or date of birth
PAN data is corrected by applying for ‘changes or correction in PAN data’ through the Income Tax Department’s PAN service providers — Protean (formerly NSDL e-Gov) or UTIITSL — online or at their centres, with proof of identity, proof of date of birth and proof of the corrected name. A small fee is shown on the portal. A person can hold only one PAN (Section 262(8) of the Income-tax Act, 2025) — if you have a second PAN, surrender it rather than using both. After correction you can download the updated e-PAN.
PAN–Aadhaar linking under the new Income-tax Act
From 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act. Section 262(5)–(6) (old Section 139AA) requires a person eligible for Aadhaar to intimate it, and a PAN can be made inoperative if Aadhaar is not intimated as prescribed. A late fee applies for linking after the deadline that expired in 2023 (₹1,000 under the earlier rules; the fee provision is now Section 430, old 234H) — check the current amount and challan steps on the e-filing portal before paying. If linking fails because of a name, gender or date-of-birth mismatch, correct either PAN or Aadhaar; the Department’s FAQ also mentions biometric Aadhaar authentication at designated centres of the PAN service providers for mismatches.
EPF and bank records
Since January 2025, EPFO members whose UAN was issued on or after 1 October 2017 and is verified with Aadhaar can correct details such as name, date of birth and gender online through the member portal without employer verification. Others still use the joint declaration process with the employer’s attestation and supporting documents. Banks and depositories usually update KYC on a written request with the corrected PAN / Aadhaar — ask for written acknowledgement.
When an affidavit, gazette or court route is needed
A full change of name (not a spelling correction) usually needs an affidavit and a newspaper advertisement, followed by publication in the Gazette — see the name change guide. A sworn affidavit that two spellings refer to the same person (a ‘one and the same’ affidavit) is accepted by some offices but not all. Date-of-birth disputes in service or pension records are governed by the employer’s rules and can end up before tribunals or courts. Aadhaar and PAN rules are the same across India; birth registration, school boards and State gazettes differ by State.
Do’s and don’ts
Do: fix the base document first; update Aadhaar and PAN to match it; keep URNs, acknowledgements and copies; and update bank, EPF and insurance records last. Don’t: make several quick Aadhaar changes and use up the lifetime limit; submit documents that are not in your own name; obtain a second PAN; or pay touts. Giving false information to UIDAI or the tax department can attract penalties.
What this guide is not
It does not decide which date of birth is legally correct for you, guarantee that any request will be approved, or replace UIDAI’s, the Income Tax Department’s or EPFO’s current instructions, which change often.

- My Aadhaar update was rejected because the limit is over — what now?
- Enrol for the update at an Aadhaar centre with valid supporting documents, then call 1947 or email help@uidai.gov.in with the latest URN / EID and request exception processing; the Regional Office verifies and decides. A name change beyond the limit needs documents such as a gazette notification.
